Rabat - After Egyptian actor Hassan Hosny refused to apologize to Moroccans amid a storm of controversy over labeling Morocco as a country of prostitution, Egypt’s Actors’ Union has issued a statement extending its apologies to the Moroccan people.
In a press release, President of Egypt’s Actors’ Syndicate Achraf Zaki expressed regret following the offensive remarks that were “attributed” to Hassan Hosny.
Achraf Zaki disclosed he sought an explanation from Hassan Hosny, adding that the latter feels sorry for what happened.
“He [HassanHosny] expressed to me his regret over the statement that was attributed to him in attemptto sow discord between artists from Egypt and Morocco,” Achraf zaki said in the statement.
Achraf Zaki pointed out the Egyptian actor emphasizedhe loves the Moroccan people and respects them.
“Hassan Hosny said Egyptians do not return good with evil. It is not logic… He was honored in Morocco several times and it is illogical that he would make such offensive comment against the people who showed him love,” the statement noted.
In a separate release to the Egyptian channel Ten TV, Achraf Zaki said the video that has gone viral does not include any offensive statement against Moroccans, adding that media reports misrepresented Hosny’s words.
In the video, Saudi actor Majeed Alrhedi seeks advice from Hassan Hosny about getting married and going to Morocco for his honeymoon. In his response, Hosny says “Why would you bring a sandwich with you to a restaurant?”
AchrafZaki argued that the Egyptian actor did not imply that Morocco is a “sex restaurant” where sex services are readily available, as media reports have claimed.
“This expression means that Morocco is a country of beauty and that Moroccan women are beautiful. This is such a simple expression and does not contain any offense to Moroccans,” Achraf Zaki argued.
