Rabat - Famous Algerian TV anchor, Khadija Benguenna, refuted the statement made by Samira Sitail, director of information at Morocco’s second national TV channel, 2M, when she challenged Morocco’s Arab identity.
The anchor, who works with the Doha-based Al Jazerra channel, reacted to the statement made by Sitail, emphasizing that the North African country is a “genuine Arab country.”

“Morocco is a genuine Arab country, whether people like it or not,” she said on Friday on her Facebook page where she has over 7.5 million followers.
The Algerian journalist’s statement went viral on social media with several thousand people sharing it or commenting on it. Comment varied between people who support her statement and those who challenge her and ask her to provide historical facts that support it.
On Thursday, Moroccan journalist Samira Sitail said in a radio interview on Thursday that Morocco “is not an Arab country.”
“We are not an Arab country, but rather Maghrebi, and our history comes from Berber origins,” she said during the interview with Radio Aswat.
“We must be proud of our roots and our origins and move away from useless debates now,” she added
