Government to put an end to Evangelization of Moroccans

Casablanca- Being a melting-point in North Africa, Morocco receives countless exchange-students and alumni from all over the world throughout the year. However, they are not all goodwill ambassadors looking forward to learning about new cultures and traditions as they might claim.

According to today’s issue of Akhbar Alyawm newspaper, the Moroccan government will set strict regulations for American Institutions intending to serve in the domain of education and development. Such set of regulations aims at preventing the evangelization of Moroccans.

According to the same source, the Moroccan Government Council approved a “draft agreement Project between Morocco and U.S.A.” on Thursday. The project puts strict regulations for American Schools and Institutions in Morocco to prevent the widespread of evangelization.

According to Article 220 in the Moroccan penal code, evangelization is a crime and anyone who engages in it may face prison time.

In conformity with the article 220 of the Moroccan Penal Code, a proselytizer may face “six months to three years prison and a fine of 100 to 500 Dirhams” for using the “means of seduction in order to convert ” a Muslim “to another religion, either by exploiting his/her weakness or his/her needs, or using for these purposes education, health, asylums and orphanage institutions.”

The  draft agreement requires any American institution of education either in preparatory or secondary education to provide a curriculum similar to the one used in U.S.A. and to be part of an N.G.O.

Furthermore, the draft agreement requires Moroccan students and students with double citizenship to be taught Arabic, Moroccan Culture and The History and Geography of Morocco by Moroccan teachers who were and will be trained by Moroccan supervisors from the Ministry of Education. In addition, the curriculum must be approved by the Moroccan authorities.
