Casablanca- Rapists in Morocco seem to benefit considerably from theleniency of the judicial system. Recently in Fez, a Moroccan family was shocked to hear that their 14-year-old daughter’s rapist was sentenced only to 5 months in prison by the city’s Court of Appeal after he was found guilty of rape.
According to Moroccan news portal Goud, a member of the victim’s family told the news outlet that one of the suspect’s relatives had paid them a visit before the trial and asked them to withdraw the case and negotiate a more amicable solution.
After the victim’s family refused her offer, the suspect’s relative warned them saying that obstinacy would lead them to a dead end and that the suspect would be released very soon. Shockingly, she was right!
The victim’s family expressed their astonishment at the court’s verdict especially that the suspect, who has already spent 4 months in jail, admitted having practiced “surface sex” on the victim while denying that he had raped her.
However, the court found him guilty of rape and violence as well. The family is now calling on the Minister of Justice, Mr. Mustapha Ramid, to intervene and open investigations on this case before the release of the suspect.
