Rabat- Clashes erupted on Friday between Spanish riot police and Moroccan-Spanish dual nationals in the occupied city of Melilla, in the wake of massive demonstrations conducted by Moroccan unemployed youth protesting the municipality’s lack of transparency in distributing jobs.

According to the January 13 edition of Almassae newspaper, the Spanish riot police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to dislodge protestors, mostly unemployed youth, who set burning tires and threw bottle firebombs at the Spanish police.

The same source went on to add that the protestors, who are seeking their fair share of the available jobs especially in the current dire economic circumstances, are treated by the Spanish authorities as pseudo citizens who are denied basic rights and privileges unlike the “true Spaniards.”

In the midst of the demonstrations, protestors set fire to pictures of Mariano Rajoy, the Prime Minister of Spain, to condemn the “inhumane” manner in which the Spanish police and the border guard treat hundreds of Moroccans who cross the border to reach the occupied city of Melilla.

Protestors also condemned the silence of the Moroccan government regarding what is happening everyday on the border crossings.
