Rachid Guerraoui, a Moroccan researcher awarded by Google

Rachid Guerraoui, a brilliant Moroccan researcher in the field of Information Technology and a professor at the Federal School of Polytechnic studies in Lausanne received the Focused Award from Google for his project Alter ego.

The Focus award is a yearly prize granted to promote creativity in Information technology and especially in research.

Google occasionally support multi-year projects through the Focused Research Awards program. The awards are for research in areas of study that are of key interest to Google, as well as the research community.

Rachid  Guerraoui, a PhD. in Information Technology and a Mathematics genius, has worked  for 30 years in the prestigious laboratories  in silicon Valley,  home to many of the world's largest technology corporations. He has also worked in the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston.

Rachid Guerraoui was born in Rabat. He spent his childhood between Khouribga and Settat and his teenage in El Jadida. He obtained his baccalaureate in Mathematics in 1984.

After the baccalaureate, he travelled to France to pursue his studies in Information engineering. He obtained a diploma in engineering from Orsay faculty in France.

In 1990, Guerraoui received the accreditation for scientific research in the Hewlett-Packard laboratories in Silicon Valley. In parallel, he worked also in the center for research in the School for Mining in Paris. His career was crowned with the entry to the prestigious MIT in Boston.

Instead of seeking a job immediately, Guerraoui chose to become a researcher and obtained a doctorate in Information Technology in 1992.

He was impressed by the humility of the MIT researchers. Rachid Gurraoui explains “I remember on my first day in the MIT, a man who was fixing the coffee machine. When he finished he offered me an espresso and asked me how much sugar I need. I thought he worked in the maintenance department.  I realized later that he was Mr. Tim Berner’s Lee, The inventor of the Web.”

 Today, Rachid Guerraoui works as at the head of the research laboratory in the Federal School for Polytechnic studies in Lausanne.

He published a number of scientific articles, as well as four books in the field of Information Technology. Rachid Guerraoui works currently on a book on the reliability of the parallel algorithm and the feasibility of an algorithm that can be used in social media platforms.
