Rabat- Moroccan international Mehdi Benatia has denied allegations which have been made against him by some Algerian media outlets.
The AS Roma defender wrote via his Twitter account that he never said he would wear the Algerian shirt and that he is "proud to play for the Moroccan national team."
Few days ago, Algerian newspaper Le Competiteur claimed that Mehdi Benatia told Algerian international and inter Milan player Saphir Taider, during a Serie A match opposing AS Roma to inter, that he “regrets not having opted for the Algerian national team.”
Le Competiteur went on to add that the only person who can “fulfill Benatia’s dream” to play for the Algerian side during Brazil’s World Cup will be nobody else but Algerian President Abdelaziz Boutflika himself.”
Born in France to a Moroccan father and an Algerian mother, the 26-years-old represented France at the U-17 level before he later decided to represent Morocco for which he played his first international match on 19 November 2008 against Zambia.
