Saudi Writer Urges his Twitter Followers to Molest Working Women

By Yousef El Kaidi Morocco World News Fez, May 30, 2013 Following the remarkable increase in female labor force in Saudi Arabia, and the slight flexibility showed by the conservative government towards working women, a Saudi “self-help” writer wrote an Arabic hash-tag on his Twitter account translated by most news outlets as "#harass_female_cashiers." Abdullah Mohammed Daoud seems to encourage his 97,000 Twitter followers to sexually molest female cashiers working at Saudi markets and grocery stores, Gulf news reported on Wednesday. Abdullah Mohammed Daoud’s comment on Twitter stirred debate among his followers who split into proponents and detractors. Some followers were cheered by the comment and considered it a blow to the concessions made by the government which tends to "westernize" the Saudi society through some social and economic reforms. However, many followers deemed the comment? which advocates female molestation? as a “disgrace” and wondered how could a writer who writes self-help books endorse such a regressive attitude towards women. “Who would seek his advice, I have to wonder?” says Rimmel Mohydin on his twitter account. Saudi Arabia is considered the most conservative Muslim country, implementing a set of restrictive laws against women’s freedom of mobility. Many campaigns were waged by social media activists asking for the enactment of laws that guarantee more freedoms for women. © Morocco World News. All Rights Reserved.
