“Tassribat Al Imtihanat”, a Facebook page created to leak Baccalaureate exam sheets snapshots, has defied Mohamed El Ouafa, Minister of Education by leaking answers to this year’s exams, which are standardized throughout all of Morocco. According to 2M, several students who were caught cheating were instantly eliminated. “Tassribat Al Imtihanat” is Arabic for “Exam Leaks”.
In response to the leaking, the Minister decided to take stricter measures and threatened to 'penalize' anyone charged with cheating. "It is true that some students cheated, but this cheating won't go unnoticed," El Ouafa was quoted as saying in a video.
The leaking page, which had promised to defeat El Ouafa prior to the exams, particularly because of his excessive pride and overconfidence in his ability to fight cheating, finally succeeded in forcing the minister to admit to the defeat.
In an interview with France 24, El Ouafa said "In addition to traditional cheating, more sophisticated ways of cheating were registered, particularly the use of Facebook and Twitter to send and receive answers to Bac exams."
Admitting that cheating did occur on a large scale, the admin of "Tassribat" page argues, is a sign of defeat and inability to take action on the part of the Ministry of Education.
"El Ouafa is defeated since he didn't succeed in eradicating cheating in Moroccan schools, " Said Rachidi, a teacher of French, told MWN.
"Sophisticated cheating is a sign that Morocco's education system is in a real abyss," Sarah Maliki, a teacher trainee, told MWN.
During his interview with France 24, El Ouafa tried to belittle the degree of cheating. "We have taken action against this kind of cheating; investigations are currently being carried out in order to arrest those who took part in cheating and sending snapshots," El Ouafa said. "Five people who were caught leaking Exam snapshots were arrested," El Ouafa added.
Yet, many students who were not caught cheating via Facebook and Twitter shared their cheating stories.
"I cheated, using my mobile phone. I received messages from a friend of mine who kept track of the snapshots 'Tassribate' page leaked," a Bac student told MWN on condition of anonymity.
"Other classmates of mine cheated, too, using the same device," the student added.
In spite of the strict measures the Ministry of Education has promised to take against the cheating phenomenon, more cheating cases have been recorded today, the second day of Bac exams.
