Taroudant- Following the strained relations between Morocco and Algeria over the recent shooting by an Algerian sniper of a Moroccan civilian, a United Arab Emirates (UAE) top official has offered to mediate the dispute between the two North African neighbors.
The UAE has offered to mediate the longstanding dispute between Algeria and Morocco, according to Anadolu, quoting an Algerian diplomat.
Speaking upon condition of anonymity, an Algerian diplomat told Anadolu on Monday that Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan had "proposed, during a phone call with Algerian officials on Thursday, to mediate a resolution to the Algerian-Moroccan row . . . which was triggered last week when a Moroccan national came under cross-border fire.”
The diplomat added that UAE officials contacted both Algerian and Moroccan officials last week in light of the strong relations of the UAE with both countries. Without giving more details on the reaction of each country to the UAE proposal, the diplomat said that the UAE initiative “aims to ease tension between the two countries."
