Rabat - The floods that hit Timoulay near the southern city of Guelmim claimed the lives of 14 members of the family of Rashid El Masoudi, the local secretary of the Justice and Development Party (PJD).
El Masoudi, who is also the regional secretary of the National Union of Workers, lost 14 members of his family including his wife and daughter due to the recent floods that hit the region.
The members of El Masoudi's family were reportedly on their way back from a wedding when their vehicle was swept away by the waters of the Tamsourt Valley between Timoulay and Bouizakarne.
The victims are still missing with emergency crews reportedly searching along the valley to recover the bodies.
Many PJD officials and ministers have expressed their condolences, including Mustapha El Khalfi, Minister of Communication and spokesperson of the Government who reportedly went to Timoulay to offer condolences and sympathy to the family of El Masoudi.
The flooding in southern Morocco has reportedly killed at least 31 people so far.
Brahim Boulid, a Moroccan journalist reporting from Guelmim told Aljazeera that the authorities were warned that the amount of rainfall would trigger floods but chose to ignore them.
"It was forecast that more than 100 millimeters of rain would fall, but nothing has been done. They just waited for the catastrophe to unfold," Boulid was quoted as saying.
