Rabat- A French sports newspapers said that Issa Hayatou, the President of the African Football Federation (CAF), has saved Moroccan football from harsher sanctions from CAF Executive Committee.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has decided to suspend Morocco from participating in the African Cup of Nations for the next four years and to fine the kingdom $10 million "in compensation for damages" as a result of the decision not to host AFCON 2015
But according to Sports French newspaper L'équipe, the sanctions could have been even harsher if CAF President Issa Hayatou had not asked the Executive Committee of the governing body of African football to impose less heavier sanctions, saying that the sanctions would have serious consequences on the Moroccan football.
"If you do that [imposing heavy sanctions], you kill the Moroccan football," Hayatou reportedly said.
The same source added that CAF's Executive Committee had initially pushed for Moroccan clubs and national team to be suspended from participating in all continental competitions until 2022.
The CAF's Executive Committee has decided during a meeting in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea on Friday that the Moroccan Football Federation will pay the sum of eight million and fifty thousand Euros (8.5 million Euros) in “compensation for all material damage sustained by CAF, stakeholders and partners as a result of the decision not to host AFCON 2015.”
It has also decided to impose on the federation the regulatory fine of $1 million (One million United States Dollars).
