Rabat - Hillary Clinton's participation at the Clinton Global Initiative Middle East and Africa scheduled to take place in Marrakech next month appears to be unlikely.

The former US Secretary of State had been scheduled to appear at the high-profile conference organized by the Clinton Foundation, on May 5-7. However, she might not join her husband, former US president Bill Clinton, at the event after she announced officially her intention to run for president in 2016, in a two-minute video posted to YouTube on Sunday.

The Clinton Global Initiative Middle East and Africa aims at connecting governments and nonprofit leaders to address problems affecting host areas.

Hillary Clinton's candidacy has been plagued by criticism from republican opponents. They complained that the former first lady's involvement with her family's foundation and acceptance of contributions from foreign governments may pose a conflict of interests.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, has criticized foreign donations to the Clinton Foundation as "thinly veiled bribes," according to politics website Politico.

He also called on Hillary Clinton to return any donations from countries with “spotty human rights records” and others that abuse the rights of women.

Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) resumed accepting new foreign donations months after Clinton stepped down as secretary of state in February 2013.

The preliminary list of expected attendees at the Marrakech meeting includes executives from OCP and Coca-Cola, as well as the presidents of Rwanda and Tanzania and senior officials from the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and the League of Arab States. Former Israeli President Shimon Peres is also on the list.
