Rabat - Algeria is on the brink of a dramatic change through an imminent military coup, according to Israeli media reports.
"The military coup is preparing, it's only a matter of weeks or months," political analyst Gilles Salem wrote in an article published in Flash-Israel, a French-speaking newspaper with close links to the Israeli intelligence service known as the Mossad.
According to the writer, the political power in Algeria is led by Said Bouteflika, brother of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
"Anxious to keep corruption at the highest level", Gilles Salem said that Said Bouteflika understood since 2013 that a breathing Abdelaziz would be more beneficial to his interests than a dead one. The writer added that the death of the president would be a declaration of open war between all the contenders for power in Algeria.
"While President Abdelaziz Bouteflika belongs to the world of the undead, the three powers, the political, intelligence and military are sharpening the knives in Algeria," Gilles Salem said.
The write added that the main contenders for power in Algeria are Said Bouteflika and General Mohamed Lamin Mediene, also known as Taoufik, who is the director of the Department of Intelligence and Security (DRS).
"The DRS is in violent struggle against the political power in Algeria," wrote Gilles Salem, adding that DRS "recently threatened to disclose information about the corruption of Bouteflika brothers." General Taoufik is also said to have put Said Bouteflika under surveillance, making the "unpacking very painful for the ruling power."
The writer predicts that the new generation of officers endorsed by the DRS will revolt soon against the current political establishment.
