Fez- Morocco has raised its vigilance and heightened security measures along its eastern borders to stop infiltrators and terrorists whose purpose may be to threaten the Kingdom’s security.

Mohamed Mhidia , the governor of the prefecture of Oujda –Angad, held a meeting last Monday to mobilize various forces in the region for greater coordinated efforts in addressing multiple security challenges on the border strip, according to daily news outlet Assabah today.

The heightened alert at the eastern borders is due to recent numerous threats by Al Qaeda and by Daesh, which have pledged allegiance to terrorist groups operating in Algeria as "Jund Al Khilafa," as well as an arrest in January of an Algerian in possession of explosives and sophisticated means of communications suspected of belonging to the terrorist group called "Jund Al Khilafa" in the region of Beni Drar.

Assabah said that heavy weaponry was deployed to the mountainous areas in front of Jebel Asfour, considered the rear base of several terrorist groups in Algeria which the Algerian army has not yet been able to dismantle.

As a preventative measure, the Moroccan authorities have installed a 110 km wall in view of anticipated terrorist threats, while a helicopter of the royal Gendarmerie conducts almost daily surveillance flights all along the border. Morocco has also installed electronic surveillance equipment along the border, which operates both day and night.

These measures are intended to combat operations that aim to instigate terrorism and that smuggle arms, especially efforts emanating from Libya, as well as to fight contraband psychotropic drugs which come from Algeria, and to stop human trafficking.
