Rabat - A Moroccan man reportedly won a settlement of nearly MAD 80.000 in a wrongful conviction lawsuit against the State.
According to daily newspaper Al Massae, the man was wrongly imprisoned while he was initially given a six-month suspended sentence in a bounced check case.
The man was wrongfully convicted by the Court of First Instance of Settat to serve two months behind bars instead of the suspended sentence.
The individual filed a lawsuit against the State seeking compensation. He sought at first MAD 150,000 in compensation. However, he only received MAD 80,000 after the Casablanca Administrative Court ruled in his favor.
This is the first time in the history of the Moroccan justice to see a wrongly accused individual being compensated by the State.
Article 122 of the Moroccan constitution guarantees the right of every citizen to seek compensation from the state if they were mistakenly convicted of something they did not commit.
