Stockholm - Here is an amusing idea: the “Political Elites” in our country, think that they are doing politics for real. Now, here is an even more entertaining thought: they really think we do think that they are doing politics for real. How naïve is that?
One of the recurrent – almost favorite- terms of the political discourse in Morocco – one I personally find despicably outdated - is “Anoukhab.” Away from the origins of the theory itself, any distinction of superiority based on intellect or morality in politics is obsolete. We know for a fact that our “political elite” isn’t probably made up of the most deserving nor gifted individuals. Anoukhab, in general, and as stated by Italian Sociologist Vilfredo Pareto earlier in the 20th century –are “those most adept at using either force or persuasion.”
In our case, it is neither of the two: they are self-proclaimed. It is only natural then to end up with a majority and opposition that, despite the theatrics, are almost interchangeable, we can hardly notice a difference in policy making if they switch positions tomorrow morning.
So do not be surprised to witness the language and discourse – and there is a huge difference between the two- of our Political Elite sinking to a very low level, because they are simply no elite at all.
If politics is nothing but “the systematic organization of hatreds” as described by the 19th century historian Henry Adams, then Hooray, we hit the jackpot! And if it is “nothing more than a means of rising in the world” as written by Samuel Johnson over 200 years ago, then Double Hooray for our majority and opposition, because they hit the jackpot!.. the proverbial jackpot of course.
Politics happened to be something else, at least in theory, and in practice in other places around the world.
It is how rules are collectively set, how they are collectively watched for and how they are - if and when necessary- collectively changed. Everything else is rarely good distraction and usually cheap entertainment. Check the weekly parliamentary sittings, and prove me wrong. Or better, open a national newspaper and read yourself to sleep, you’ve got the thrill, the horror, the romance, it’s better than Gothic fiction.. if only we read!
There is an old English saying - you probably know already - “you only get what you deserve”. Our majority definitely deserves its opposition and we surely deserve our majority and opposition.
Until we decide otherwise, the joke is on us!
