Rabat- Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has come under fire after a passenger accused the airline of serving pork meat on a Canada-bound flight.

On May 8, several passengers, mainly Moroccans living in Canada, protested a three-hour delay of RAM Flight AT 208 departing from Casablanca. RAM officials were forced to rent a flight from a foreign airline serving the same destination.

Ahmed Al Idrissi, a Moroccan passenger who was onboard the flight, said, "After passengers changed the flight, they discovered that no one on the staff spoke Arabic."

"While the hostess was serving us food, I asked her if it is Halal food, which she confirmed. However, when I checked it, I was shocked to find out that the food contained traces of pig blood and skins," the passenger told Hespress.

Ahmed went on to add that he warned the other passengers that the meals served contained pork, which is forbidden in Islam. His act reportedly provoked the staff, who began to argue with him.

"Then, hostess supervisor, who is Moroccan, intervened and expressed his apologies while making excuses to calm the passengers down," Ahmed Al Idrissi explained.

RAM, on the other hand, denied that such an incident occurred on flight AT 208.

"Food served on all RAM flights or the flights that RAM rent during rush hours, is from one supplier, which is Atlas Servair. This company is a subsidiary of RAM and the France's company Servair," said Abdelhakim Chalout, a RAM spokesperson.

"RAM flights do not serve pork meals," Chalout concluded.

Consumption of pork is prohibited in Islam. The Quran prohibits eating pork meat in many verses, including Al Baqara 2:173, in which God says: "He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah".
