Rabat- The Ksar El Kbir region near Tangier has been shocked by tragedy, where a man burned his wife alive for not allowing him to have a second wife. He has been prosecuted and sentenced to life in prison with a 200,000 DH fine.

As debates surrounding polygamy have made headlines the past few weeks, a dramatic story has unleashed more important questions about the topic. A man who wanted to marry a second wife was condemned to life in prison for burning his first wife alive for opposing the idea.

According to Al Akhbar al Yaoum, the 33 year old was convicted of the felony by a Tangier court for “voluntary arson” and “not rescuing a person in danger.” The murder occurred on January 21 when the felon set his house on fire. He took his 3 children with him and left his 30-year-old wife to die inside the house.

The primary evidence of the crime was the convicted man’s 12-year-old son, who revealed his father’s plan to the police. During the investigation, both families admitted that the culprit wanted a second wife, but only with the approval of the first.

He first considered divorce as an option, but due to financial circumstances had changed this decision. The man began to mistreat his wife in the hopes that she would divorce him voluntarily, but in vain.

He finally decided to burn her alive with the intent to make the police believe it was an accident. Fortunately for justice in Ksar El Kbir and the victim’s family, the man’s plan was revealed.
