Rabat - A workshop bringing together tour operators and travel agencies from Russia gathered in Marrakech, Morocco over the weekend.
According to Liberation newspaper, they explored the destination of Morocco and the services that could attract Russian tourists.
The event was intended to introduce Morocco, its regions, main tourist attractions, and the various services that can be offered to Russian tourists wishing to visit the country.
In 2014, 36,000 Russian tourists visited Morocco, a 22 per cent decrease in comparison to the previous year.
Morocco aims to capitalize on the fact that it is Russia's main partner for foreign trade in Africa to attract more Russian tourists.
However, the Ministry of Tourism's promotional advertising has been low in the Russian Federation and many Russians do not look at Morocco as an upscale tourist destination.
Organizers said the first step to attract more Russian tourists is to change their vision towards the country, as many of them think Morocco provides a low-end tourism.
Minister of tourism Lahcen Haddad said during the Morocco-Russia Economic Forum that attracting tourists from emerging economies, especially Russia, is one of the basic goals of Morocco's tourism vision.
Morocco seeks to attract 800,000 Russian tourists by the year 2020.
