Rabat - A group of Moroccan families from Mohammedia, a city 30 km north of Casablanca, are suing retail store Carrefour.

According to Hespress, the group of 17 families who live in a neighbourhood near Carrefour are accusing the store of selling all kinds of alcohol to Moroccans. They are calling on the government to withdraw the alcohol license from the retailer.

The lawsuit is the first of its kind in Morocco. Abdul Latif Ait Allal, who represents the owners of one of the buildings near Carrefour, said that one of the reasons that pushed the families living in the buildings to sue the retailer is the chaos caused by the promotion and sale of wine to the youth in the neighbourhood.

“Carrefour markets the wines under the protection of its own security guards, to the degree that the place has become a magnet for addicts, alcoholics, and the homeless. This is done in front of pupils and students who are studying at educational institutions not far from the shopping store," he was quoted by Hespress as saying.

He added that the law states that shopping centers selling liquor must be more than one kilometer from educational institutions, and Carrefour has disobeyed this rule.
