Rabat - The Saudi Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdulazizbin Abdullah al-Sheikh, said that soldiers participating in the war against the Houthi rebels in Yemen are allowed to eat during Ramadan and make up for the missed days at a later time.

The Saudi scholar based his “fatwa” on the fact that the soldiers are fulfilling their duty, and may, therefore, eat if they are unable to fast during this holy month, which started on Thursday in most Muslim countries.

“Whoever among you is able to fast, he should fast, and those who are unable to fast because they are deployed to face the enemy, preserve our borders, and fulfill their duty may eat during Ramadan and make up the missed fasts on other days,” the Saudi scholar was quoted by Okaz news website as saying.

According to the teachings of Islam, every healthy Muslim who has reached the age of puberty is required to fast in Ramadan.

But there are exceptions when Muslims are exempted from fasting, provided that they make up the missed days later on after Ramadan or by feeding a needy person for each day they miss.

Exemptions from fasting apply to the elderly, women who are menstruating, pregnant, or breast-feeding, and people who are traveling during Ramadan.

If someone can’t fast at all for health reasons, they are required to make up every day of Ramadan they don’t fast by feeding a needy person.
