After Wave of Protests in Tindouf Camps, Polisario Declares State of Emergency

Rabat - A number of figures from the Algeria-based Polisario Front have announced that they are proposing an alternative solution to the Western Sahara issue.

Members of a faction of Polisario in opposition of the Front's leadership gathered last week and agreed to form a body that would represent all elements of the Sahrawi people.

The meeting took place in the home of Sheikh Saleh Weld Mohammed Sheikh of the Rguibates Tribe on June 17. Participants called for the Polisario Front and its institutions, including the military to be dissolved.  They also supported the Moroccan proposal for the autonomy of Western Sahara that was presented to the United Nations Security Council in April 2007.

The group demanded the departure of Polisario leader Mohammad Abdulaziz and his associates, urging them to hand over power to a new generation of politicians capable of putting an end to the suffering of the Sahrawi refugees inside the Tindouf Camps.

They also sought support from Tindouf camps inhabitants, as well as recognition from the international community to obtain the right to speak on behalf of the Sahrawi people.

The group accused the Polisario leadership of trading in the suffering of the Sahrawi refugees in order to ask for more funds and humanitarian aid sent by international donors.

They also agreed to send a letter to King Mohammed VI asking him to appoint Mohammed Ali El Admi, commonly known by his nom de guerre Omar El Hadrami, as a royal advisor on Sahrawi affairs, given his close ties with the Palace and the Tindouf residents.

According to the group, appointing El Admi would reassure the camp residents that Morocco wants the Sahara with its inhabitants.

Mohammed Ali El Admi is a Sahrawi politician and former senior member of the Polisario Front, which he co-founded. He joined Morocco in 1989 and settled in Rabat. In January 2014, Mohammed VI appointed him as the Wali (governor) of the Guelmim-Es Semara region.
