Rabat - A sit-in was held in Casablanca on Sunday in support of two young women who are facing charges of "gross indecency" after they were accused of wearing 'suggestive clothes'.
The women were arrested on June 16 at an open-air market in Inezgane, a suburb of the southern city of Agadir, after their outfits were deemed inappropriate. The young women—hairdressers aged 23 and 29--were later charged with gross indecency and a trial has been set for July 6.
A number of political figures and rights activists gathered at the Place des Nations Square in Morocco's economic hub to express their solidarity with the two women.
The participants denounced what they described as the attack on personal freedoms and violence against women. They also called on authorities to ensure that the freedom of women is respected.
An online petition in support of the two women has also been launched. The petition has been signed by more than 14,000 supporters.
Article 483 of the Moroccan Penal Code states that anyone found guilty of committing an act of “public obscenity” can be jailed for between a month and two years.
