Rabat - Moroccan Minister of Interior, Mohamed Hassad said that the Moroccan government will not authorize the cultivation of cannabis in the country.
“The cultivation of kif and its commercialization are and will remain illegal,” he said.
During the weekly meeting of the Chamber of Counselors on Tuesday, one of the representatives from the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) called for the legalization of kif cultivation when addressing the Interior Minister. The representative said that cultivating kif will compensate for the lack of government investment in northern Morocco.
Mohamed Hassad replied by saying the cultivation will remain illegal. The Minister also specified that the authorities in the region would ensure the law concerning the cultivation of kif is properly enforced.
The subject was proposed earlier, and has been subject to controversy between the PJD and the PAM. Through Larbi Lamharchi, the PAM stated that they would not run for elections in the regions where cannabis is cultivated. The PJD took advantage of the PAM’s promise to claim that the political activities of the party are financed with drug money.
