Rabat- Amidst the controversy sparked by the arrest of two women in Agadir last month, another woman has allegedly been assaulted for “wearing indecent clothes” during the month of Ramadan.
A young woman from the city of Tetouan in northern Morocco posted a status on her Facebook account where she claims that she was the victim of a verbal and physical assault by a man in the street because of the way she was dressed during Ramadan.
According to Fadma Simane, a student at the University of Fine Arts in Tetouan, the man who assaulted her had initially tried to get her attention by complimenting her looks when he first saw her. As she ignored him, the man got angry and then started shouting at her, cursing at her and castigating her for the “way she was dressed during Ramadan.”
“I was beaten and a victim of insults because I was not wearing “modest” clothes in Ramadan, after I ignored a man who was sexually harassing me in a popular market,” Fadma said on her Facebook page.
“In the beginning he started with complimenting my eyes, then he turned to insults,” she said. “He asked me, ‘why is your chest bare in Ramadan?’ I replied that this was none of his business and that he is not my father to tell me what to do,” she added. Angered by the reaction of the young woman, she claimed the man punched her on her arm.
According to Fadma’s account, things could have been worse if she had not left the scene immediately. Fadma said that the incident happened in the midst of passersby who did nothing to help.
“Suddenly I felt a punch on my arm, and then he came close to me and tried to attack me with a knife, but I hurried away amid the indifference of passersby. I felt an overwhelming sense of pain and anger, and had tears in my eyes,” she complained.
