Miami - A recent study by the Spanish Real Instituto Elcano on the brand image of Spain in Morocco concludes that Moroccans “hate” Spain.
Such strong remarks clarify that this “misperception” of public opinion does not reflect the current state of bilateral relations, both political and commercial, which are described as “excellent”. So where does this “hate” come from? Some have attributed it to the “abyss of mutual ignorance” between both countries.
The large study conducted by Elcano in which 23 countries were considered and 80,000 people were interviewed shows that Morocco is the country with the least favorable image of Spain.
Another smaller study conducted among 400 people in Morocco between the ages of 18-70 says that 18% of Moroccans think of Spain when they think of “crisis”. The Elcano Institute noted, “This low grading of Spain in Morocco must be placed in relation to the tendency Moroccans have to undervalue the majority of other countries.”
Moroccans public opinion is divided in regards to Spain. 37% of Moroccans consider Spaniards to be “intolerant”; a figure that can be easily understood by the difficulties Moroccan immigrants suffer in Spain to open mosques.
Rulers of both countries are aware of these results in regards to public opinion. Moreover, King of Spain Felipe VI and King of Morocco Mohammed VI strive to ensure that both governments maintain a “pragmatic and intelligent” approach and an “exemplary cooperation” for the benefit of both nations.
Besides Morocco, the study shows that Spain has a negative image in Colombia and Chile and a very good image in Russia, Australia, Italy, and USA.
Significantly, Morocco and Spain have mutual agreements in the fight against terrorism, illegal immigration, and drug trafficking. Bilateral relations between both countries are on the rise and Spain has become Morocco’s number one trading partner.
The Real Instituto Elcano’s study did not take into account all aspects of international relations and did not focus on the positive aspects of bilateral relations between the two countries.
