According to the Moroccan daily Almassae, 137 mosques affiliated to the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, in areas of the atlas, have hanged Amazigh flags on their walls.
Activists in social media attributed this unprecedented act to the so called “Amazigh imams movement” created only recently and featuring about 254 Amazigh imams, who are devoted to the enlightened “Amazigh Islam” which stands “against the Wahhabi sect.”
“I think that no flag should float on or in a mosque be it that of Saudi Arabia, Iran or Morocco.” A person said in a comment.
“Islam is a unique religion and can be transmitted by any language; that’s all” commented another on an image posted on the Facebook page of Imazighenpress, criticizing the expression of the “Amazigh Islam.”
The image shows the Amazigh flag hanged on the wall before a group of people who were listening to a lecture in what looks like a small mosque in a rural area.
It is worth to mention that the Amazigh language has been used by imams to deliver Jumuah speeches, and to address worshippers in the Moroccan mosques long ago before the formalization of Tamazight language alongside Arabic in the new constitution.
Up to the moment the ministry in charge of the mosques has not issued yet any official statement legalizing or denouncing the act.
