Rabat - French-Moroccan Sofia Essaïdi will play the role of Umm Kulthum in a new film directed by Guila Braoudé that will highlight the artistic life of the "Diva of the Arab World".
Former candidate of Star Academy, the Moroccan singer of a French mother revealed that she will play the role of Umm Kulthum in the movie "The Voice".
"It's a huge challenge," the singer said. "I grew up in Morocco in a more Europeanized family because my mother is French, but despite that, we couldn’tmiss Umm Kulthum’s songs,” she said
“My mother always told me stories about her. Thanks to Umm Kulthum, she learned Arabic phonetics."
Speaking about the star of oriental music, Guila Braoudé hopesher new film will do good to Islam, as Umm Kulthum did. "There are those who do harm to Islam and those who do good. Umm Kulthum is obviously part of those who do good,” she said.
“I hope this film will do good, too, in this turbulent time for the Arab world,"she added.
Although Sofia Essaïdi had significant experience in acting, she will face a huge challenge coping with the majestic voice of the diva and her unique character on the stage.
"I am always afraid of not being honest to the actual artist's image. There is a real pressure,” she said, adding that she is very enthusiastic to take on this new adventure.
With her exceptional talent displayed in the musical film "Cleopatra, the last queen of Egypt" by Kamel Ouali, it is estimated that the young Moroccan actress can easily play the role of the Egyptian diva.
