Washington - D.C- Since King Mohammed VI raised the issue of incompetent consular staff during his Throne speech, it may be time to address the Palace regarding Royal Air Maroc's (Morocco’s national airline known as RAM) lack of a vision and a strategy in dealing with Moroccans living abroad (MRE).
RAM’s apathy hurts the image of the Kingdom, the local economy, tourism revenues and national security. It is an issue that goes beyond an airline complaint regarding delayed flights.
The King’s criticism of self-serving diplomats shows once again that King Mohammed VI addresses issues that are close to the hearts of the MRE, as soon as he hears about them. Alas, the case of RAM incompetence in North America seems to be stuck with bureaucrats not willing to pass on the message. The impediment remains a tall wall of high ranking officials who want to protect RAM management.
It is worth noting that over the years a legion of Moroccan governmental officials visited with the Moroccan community in the USA and Canada, but they never had the resolve to address the criticisms leveled at RAM. In fact, on several occasions, governmental representatives openly admitted that they have no power to address the government owned Arline impassiveness toward Moroccan nationals.
The idea of raising these concerns or complaints to the highest authorities in the country may sound ridiculous and pitiful. However, the seriousness of the situation and the lack of response from RAM leadership have pushed the Moroccans of North America (MNA) to make their grievances with Morocco’s airlines as a top priority.
It seems that only a Royal directive mandating drastic changes would lead to an improvement in RAM dealings with the Moroccans leaving abroad. Such conclusion gives me pause as to the capability of this airline to ever reach its potential and fulfill its national mandate.
The King spent few weeks in the Gulf region and in Europe. During his stays he met informally and without Royal protocols with several Moroccans living in these countries which gave him a chance to listen to their concerns. Unfortunately, the Moroccans living across the Atlantic must rely on officials; many get free RAM tickets, to make the case against a company that was bailed out using taxpayers’ Dirhams.
For the MRE in Europe and the Gulf, Consulate functioning is more important the national airlines performance. But for the voiceless MNA, RAM intransigence is a focal point in their grievances.
The thousands of Moroccans who are unable to go to Morocco because of high ticket prices all year long end up spending their hard earned cash somewhere else. In fact, RAM pricing policy deprives the home country of hard currency and hurts small and big businesses in Morocco. Dropping the price of a single ticket with couple of hundreds of dollars for a family of four will encourage second and third generation of Moroccan Americans to visit more frequent and thus stay closer to their homelands need.
While I, and hundreds of Moroccans and North Americans, avoid flying RAM, many Moroccans have no choice but to use RAM. These folks, a good number have imitated means, should have a voice.
Until a Royal order is issued, RAM management will remain indifferent to the plight of MNA. It is rather a systematic failure of the airline’s officials to comprehend the long term impact of their arrogance on the national economy and image of the Kingdom. . As thousands of Moroccans in the USA and Canada continue struggling to pay for a visit to the home country, the shaming of this government owned airline must go on. Please share!
