Rabat- The overall rate of unemployment has increased by 43,000 people at the national level, said the high Commission for Planning (HCP) in its analysis of the labor market in 2013.

This is result of an increase of 47,000 unemployed in urban areas and a decrease of 4,000 in the rural areas.

The same source went on to highlight that the unemployment rate increased from 13.4% to 14% in urban areas and decreased by 4% to 3.8% in rural areas. At the national level, there has been a slight increase of 0.2% from 9% to 9.2%.

The unemployment rate among young people aged between 15-24 years increased as well from 18.6% to 19.3%, and among non-degree holders from 4% to 4.6%.

However, the period between 2012-2013 witnessed the creation of 114,000 new jobs, 26,000 in urban areas and 88,000 in rural areas.

These new jobs have benefited services sectors with 101,000 jobs, agriculture and fisheries with 58,000, and industry (including crafts) with 5000. Yet, the construction sector has, meanwhile, lost 50,000 jobs. It is also “the only sector that lost jobs at the national level,” said HCP.
