Casablanca - The Moroccan Ministry of Interior has recently shared positive news on the rate of criminality in the kingdom.
According to Minister of Interior Mohamed Hassad, the recorded number of criminal assaults in Morocco in 2013 showed a decrease of 2% compared to 2012.
In response to a question asked in the House of Representatives on the "alarming increase in deadly assaults against citizens,” the Minister stated that the number of victims of murder had decreased by 2%.
According to the Minister, the number of recorded robberies in the kingdom decreased by 1.3%,, whereas theft decreased by 2%.
The Minister also stated that there were 72 premeditated murders in Casablanca in 2013, 37 in Fez, 22 in Tangier and 8 in Marrakech.
Hassad noted that these cities experienced a decline in the number of voluntary homicides overall compared to 2012.
Robberies declined by 15% in Casablanca, 14% in Marrakech, 13% in Fez and 16% in Tangier. However, the capital Rabat experienced an increase of 18% compared to 2012.
It is also noteworthy that new types of crimes have started surfacing in the Morocco, ranging from armed bank robberies to police impersonation. Police arrested a man in Casablanca’s Ain Chock neighborhood for impersonating a police officer last December.
Still, phone robbery remains the most common street crime in the kingdom, and tension between robbers and victims sometimes leads to serious injury and even murder.
The lack of police authority in zones where robbery and other crime is rampant is one factor among many that account for the shocking pervasiveness of many criminal activities.
