Casablanca - Following the forced eviction last month of an elderly Moroccan couple, Ibba Ijou and her husband Moulay Ahmed, from their house in Lakhsass, a southern Moroccan town, Moroccans have mobilized themselves in solidarity with the elderly couple.
On Saturday many Moroccans participated in a sit-in, before the headquarters of the Ministry of Justice in Rabat in solidarity with the elderly couple who were ordered by a Trial Court in Tiznit to vacate their home.
Dozens of people responded to the call of the Committee for the Support of the Victims of Boutzkite. The committee had called on activists in civil society to take part in a sit-in before the headquarters of the Ministry of Justice in Rabat, in support of Ibba Ijou and her husband.
The sit-in, organized under the slogan, "the Caravan of Dignity,” denounced what it called "the web of corruption that plagues the province of Tiznit.” The demonstrators referred to the injustice done to Ijou and her husband as an example of this corruption.

Moroccan social activists have called on Mr. Mustafa Ramid, the Minister of Justice, to intervene with respect to the couple’s situation as soon as possible. Ibba Ijou’s health has been deteriorating since the day she and her husband were expelled from their house. The elderly woman was hospitalized on Saturday, January 25, at Tiznit Hospital, where she is still currently receiving medical care.
In the same context, 2M, the Moroccan TV channel, stirred outrage among Moroccans after it had allegedly “refused” to broadcast a report about the elderly Moroccan couple. The report, which was supposed to be broadcast on the channel’s 8pm newscast for Monday, January 27, was never aired.
A video of the January 27 news report that went viral on social networks showed 2M’s broadcaster shifting to a different topic when he was about to address the elderly couple’s story during the newscast. Many Moroccans who were expecting Ijou and Moulay Ahmed’s story to be broadcast on 2M that day were “shocked” by the channel’s decision to “cancel” the broadcast of the report.
However, the coordinators of 2M’s regional agencies justified the incident via comments on Facebook, saying that the report was not broadcast “because of a technical problem, as the tape on which the report was recorded was not sent to the newscast studio on time.”
