Rabat - Two airport employees in Saudi Arabia have been convicted and sentenced to four years in prison each for sexually harassing two Iranian teenage pilgrims.

The two teenage boys were visiting Saudi Arabia in March to perform Umrah when they were sexually assaulted by employees at the King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah.

The criminal court in Jeddah also ordered on Wednesday that the two Saudi airport employees be lashed 1,000 times.

The incident prompted Iran to suspend all pilgrimages, or umrahs, to Saudi Arabia "until the criminals are tried and punished."

Saudi Arabia has promised "the strictest penalties for the perpetrators of these types of crimes, which are condemned by all sectors of Saudi Muslim society."

The two Iranian pilgrims, aged 14 and 15, said they were sexually harassed at the airport on the pretext of a body search. They were reportedly taken for body checks and were subject to sexual harassment acts.
